The second quarter Biomass for the Bioeconomy Technology Watch Newsletter is now available.

The Technology Watch Newsletter of the Biomass for the Bioeconomy sector for the second quarter of 2024 is now available and, in this case, offers timely, schematic and quick-to-read information on European projects related to the biorefinery area.

Today, biorefineries play a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable, bio-based economy. These facilities convert biomass into a wide variety of products, such as biofuels, bioplastics and biochemicals, thus helping to reduce dependence on fossil resources and mitigate climate change.

Policies and regulations, especially those adopted since 2018, have been critical to private companies’ investment decisions in biorefineries. According to the Biorefineries distribution in the EU report by the Publications Office of the European Union, there are more than 800 biorefineries in the European Union. Sixty percent produce bio-based chemical compounds, 45% produce biofuels and 17% generate biomaterials and fibers. The European Union is actively supporting the development of this sector through various initiatives. It is worth highlighting the large number of projects being financed by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). CBE JU is a partnership between the European Union and the Bioindustries Consortium (BIC) that finances innovative projects in biorefineries to strengthen the European industrial base and promote industrial processes within the framework of Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation program.
