The Biomass for the Bioeconomy Technology Watch Newsletter nº54 (Fourth quarter 2024) is now available.
The Technology Watch Newsletter of the Biomass for the Bioeconomy sector for the fourth quarter of 2024 is now available and, in this case, offers timely, schematic and quick-reading information on the recovery of waste from the food industry.
According to the European Commission, more than 100 million tonnes of food produced in Europe is wasted annually. This waste occurs throughout the food chain, from the farmer to the final consumer, but it is in the first stage, corresponding to producers and the food industry, that losses of between 30% and 40% are concentrated.
Faced with this challenge, by-product recovery is emerging as a promising strategy to move towards a more sustainable, profitable and innovative future for the food industry.
Thus, the European Union actively supports research and development in food waste recovery, through programmes such as Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. These programmes fund projects that address sustainability and the circular economy, including food waste management.
